Deciding to adopt a baby is no easy task. It involves not only your emotional state but your financial standing as well. Questions like “Am I ready to raise a child?” or “Am I financially stable?” keep playing on our minds. Adopting is not something that you just decide on a whim. It should be thought of hundreds of times and most especially you have to be sure and ready that it is what you really want. Once you start the process, it would be hard to stop. If you decide that adoption is really the way you want to go then the next step would be to find out how to begin baby adoption. Are there steps and procedures to follow?
Of course, there are procedures to follow in adopting. The process may not be the same in all states but basically they follow the same guidelines. Here are some guidelines or steps in how to begin baby adoption.
First, you have to contact an adoption agency. There are hundreds of adoption agencies listed but choosing the right one for you will be tricky. Make sure that you do some research first before settling on one. You should be able to trust the adoption agency. It is the adoption agency’s job to provide you with all the information you need to begin baby adoption. They will supply you with options as to how you can go about the adoption.
Next, you will be sent an information packet by the adoption agency as well as a set of questions to answer- background information about yourself. The information you will provide will be kept confidential and will be used for the sole purpose of the adoption process. On the other hand, if you have questions regarding the literature that was sent to you, you can ask the assigned adoption specialist to you to answer all your queries.
If everything looks good to you, then an adoption plan will have to be formulated. You and your adoption specialist have to come up with a plan on how you want to proceed. Things like, will you be the one to choose a family or should the adoption agency choose one for you? Would you like to know and talk to the birth mom or not? If you do, be ready to answer the birth mom’s questions honestly. Don’t just tell her what you think she wants to hear. Just remember to be yourself.
When everything is set, the next thing that you have to do is wait, wait for the baby to be born. There are some cases wherein the birth mom will choose to have you around during the labor and delivery but there are also some who would choose the opposite and will just ask you to wait until she has given birth and you can take the baby home.
Upon the baby’s birth, you will be called in to sign adoption papers. Your adoption agency will take you through all the legal procedures that your state requires when adopting a baby. New concerns will arise, that is to be expected. Continue to have an open dialogue with your adoption agency until you are comfortable with your new role.
Baby adoption is a lengthy process. But if you go through the proper channels, you can be sure that you will get the support that you need. Do your own research before plunging in. But most importantly be sure that this is really what you want. Remember you are taking responsibility for another person. Be sure that you are capable of providing a loving atmosphere to the baby that you are bringing home with you.
