How to give a baby up for adoption

Pregnancy can be a really great experience for first time mothers. The opportunity to nurture a baby and harbor life is one that is truly considered as a blessing. But unfortunately, not all pregnancies are planned and every so often pregnancies come unexpectedly, and for a woman who is not ready, unplanned pregnancies can be a very difficult thing to face. For some, they may not be ready to face motherhood for reasons such as emotional or financial instability. But whatever the reason may be, despite the fact that the child is loved, separation through adoption seems to be the only way to ensure a better future for the child and also give willing individuals or couples who cannot have a child of their own, the opportunity to become parents.

The first step is if faced with a difficult decision such as this is to try and determine all the factors and see if adoption really should be the right decision for you and the baby, having the baby’s best interest in mind. While giving a baby up for adoption is a difficult thing to do, it also is a selfless act that you can do for your child and the willing individuals or couples wanting a baby of their own. Although, you must remember that giving your baby up for adoption would also mean that you would be permanently and legally giving up custody of your baby. Always think long and hard before committing especially if you may have any doubts.

Do your research and make background checks of different legitimate child adoption agencies. Make appointments and meet with different counselors to help you with the process and provide you with all the information you need and all the legalities. Choose what type of adoption would work best for you. There are two different kinds of adoption –closed adoption is one that means after the baby is born, the agency will be the one to choose where the child would be placed and would offer the birth mother/parents very limited opinion in the matter, while open adoption is the other type that means that the mother can choose which adoptive parents or parent she wants her child to be raised. In most cases this also means that the adoption agency allows the mother permission to keep in touch with the adoptive parents and the baby, allowing her to still a part of the baby’s life as he or she grows up.

Upon concluding that adoption is what is best for you and the baby, and upon choosing which type of adoption you want, the agency will guide you through the process step by step and their attorneys will handle all the legalities and paperwork needed. You will then be asked to sign all the legal supporting documents finalizing the adoption.

When faced with such a hard decision like this, it is always important to seek the advice of people you love and look up to and care for you. Always surround yourself with your support system to help you through a time like this. Although giving your baby up for adoption may be a noble thing you can do to ensure your baby’s future, adoption can be a very emotional time for you. Always seek counsel from family, friends, even professionally if needed.
